Our Team

At Strathorn, the learning never stops – not just for our Students, but also for our Instructors. We offer coaching from a highly trained team of staff with Scottish Vocational Qualifications up to SVQ level 3, British Horse Society Qualifications from BHS Assistant Instructors to BHS Intermediate Instructor and UK Coaching Qualifications up to UKCC level 3.

Our staff come from many different backgrounds and have a huge variety of skills to offer. We have staff who compete, staff with show experience, we work with people with special needs and have staff who have worked as personal coaches to competing athletes. We have instructors who are mothers, so know how to look after little ones, instructors with experience working abroad and who have trained under some of the UKs top coaches.  Our instructors haven’t forgotten how they learned or what they found difficult; they understand why sometimes you don’t get it and can teach you in hundreds of different ways until you do.  Having worked with thousands of clients over the years, each with their own specific challenges, we have found countless ways to teach you the fundamental skills you need to get to the next level.

I am incredibly lucky to work with a fantastic team of staff and students who are my friends as well as my colleagues.
— Amy

Amy had her first real lesson at Hayfield EC in Aberdeen when she was 8 years old. From that day on she was hooked! She progressed working at Hayfield for free lessons and when she was studying she rode on the University Teams, working fulltime in the summer holidays too. The day after her final Uni exam she started working as a trainee instructor at Hayfield.

Amy is the yard manager at Strathorn Farm Stables, a BHS Riding and Road Safety trainer & assessor and BHS Intermediate Instructor. Amy has UKCC level 3 in coaching and is also an SVQ Assessor up to level 3 and therefore spends a great deal of time student training for both the SVQ and BHS qualifications up to the BHSII.

She teaches freelance for pony clubs and also does clinics for livery yards as well as teaching private clients in her spare time. She has competed British Dressage at Elementary level, British Show Jumping at 1.05m and British Eventing at Novice level with her horse Dollar. She now competes with her young horse Fabia and hopes she will follow Dollar up the ranks and beyond.

This year she has received a scholarship from the BHS to train for her BHSI (British Horse Society Instructor).

Jane has been working at Strathorn for sixteen years! She started riding horses when she was 34 and now has over 10 years of teaching experience in horse riding. For Jane, the best thing about it is seeing the riders grow and accomplish their goals. ”But”, she says, ”you have to be willing”.

I love going to all the shows with Strathorn and the Highland Show is my highlight of the year! Most of all I enjoy being part of the Strathorn team as I feel part of the big happy family.
— Hamish

Hamish has been helping out at Strathorn since the age of 11. As he got older George and Ruth gave him the chance to help out with preparation of horses for shows, open days and weddings. He progressed to the Young Handlers Classes and qualified each year to enter the Young Handlers Class at the Royal Highland Show. He is now aiming for Young Stockman at the Highland Show.

Hamish is currently studying at College but helps out as often as he can at the stables. He especially enjoys working with the Clydesdales.
